Industrial chimneys

Industrial chimneys - the forgotten maintenance objects

Normally a chimney stops for a long time. But it can also break down quickly. This is usually due to a lack of maintenance or a change in the chimney's working situation. Or that the chimney top is incorrectly designed. With such changes, the flue gas temperature usually drops. Which means that the chimney is no longer kept dry and resistant.

The chimney as an industrial monument

Some chimneys must be preserved for posterity. Sometimes this requires renovation and conservation with knowledge of old construction methods. In collaboration with the National Heritage Board, we carry out restorations of industrial chimneys that are interesting to preserve, to show the old Swedish industrial environment.

This means, among other things, that we must have knowledge of previous design and construction methods. It even happens that we have to master the same kind of building material that the original chimney was made of. Partly so that it can be preserved in a condition that corresponded to the original. Partly because it is not obvious that old and new building materials work well together. In such cases, the renovation may counteract its own purpose.

Construction of the chimney top

Many chimney tops are incorrectly designed. They can not repel snow and rain. This leads to rapid corrosion, which causes leakage and severe damage to the outer casing, to the flues and their insulation as well as other internal details.

Waste incineration quickly causes major damage

The fuel affects the life of the chimney. The most corrosive flue gas is obtained when burning waste. Here, the flue pipe stops should be extended, to prevent consequential damage to the chimney top. The drainage in the chimney top must also be effective to prevent water collection.

Reasons that can quickly break down a chimney are, for example:

  • Conversion to a new oil, gas or electric boiler.
  • Fuel change.
  • Supplementation with electric boiler, heat pump or similar.
  • That flue gas condensation has been installed or that the flue gas temperature has been lowered in another way.
  • Transition to district heating.
  • Combination of auxiliary heating system and ordinary oil boiler.
  • When several boilers are connected to the same chimney.
  • Incorrect chimney stop.
